![]() While it seems obvious that a media streamer would do such a thing, they don’t all accomplish this task, like the Roku 2 for instance. In addition to the streaming services WD also has the ability to play both local content and networked content. Add that to many other quality channels including Pandora, Hulu Plus, Netflix, CinemaNow, Blockbuster and WD has a pretty complete offering of the top-tier streaming media services. WD is making strides though, part of today’s announcement of the WD TV Live, includes the addition of new content from Spotify, a first for media boxes of this nature and Dailymotion. While WD won’t say for sure, it’s our guess that this deal precludes them from working with Amazon on streaming content for some period of time. When WD started down the media streamer line, they opted to go with Blockbuster for movies, for one reason or another. It’s hard to ignore the elephant in the room though WD does not have a deal with Amazon in place. ![]() When it comes to content, WD goes with the less-is-more approach, making sure the content they provide is of high quality. For WD, it’s the ability to stream content from networked sources, something that Roku has inexplicably rejected in their latest hardware revision and Apple locks down to a certain degree. Apple TV is tightly integrated with iTunes and other Apple services. Each device has a core set of benefits for the Roku 2 it’s a robust set of channels, that may or may not have value, depending on your likes. The footprint, price point and features of the WD TV Live are going to draw instant comparisons to Roku and Apple TV, who are industry leaders in media streaming boxes without local storage. TV Live is not only much smaller than the Live Hub, but it also features WiFi, making setup about as easy as it gets. Where the WD TV Live Hub is the bigger brother with 1TB of internal storage and geared to be in the home theater, the WD TV Live has no local storage and is designed to go with the bedroom, office or other TV in the house. TV Live is designed to get both your networked media files and streaming services into new places in the home. Western Digital has added to their line of media streaming products with their latest effort, the WD TV Live (WDBHG70000NBK). ![]() ![]() ![]() Optional - I also deleted the dos.exe file in the Steam folder and renamed the Tomb1main.exe to dos.exe so that Steam would open Tomb1main by default when opening the game from the Steam library, as by default Steam opens the dos version rather than the patched launcher.Lara Croft: Tomb Raider is a 2001 action adventure film based on the Tomb Raider video game series featuring the character Lara Croft, portrayed by Angelina Jolie. With the patch the the game ran fine with a controller and in my desktops native resolution. I immediately set about finding a community patch and installed Tomb1Main into the Tomb Raider folder. Most key items are on tiles that are unique to their environment drawing your intention to them, but there was a key in the cistern area and a fuse in the mines area that weren't hidden behind puzzles and in plain sight that I missed.Īs the game is about 25 years old at this point it runs out of a dosbox window. The game is quite old at this point, so graphics aren't really a highlight anymore but on release this game was inspiring, I didn't mind the graphics, but did fine some key items hard to spot and did run around some areas a fair bit looking for something that was in plain sight but I had run past and hadn't seen due to it blending into the background. Most other sounds are either environment background noise, or dragging tiles around are fine for what they are. Lara is also voiced, and while she doesn't say a huge amount she plays the part well. Sound effects are also fairly good and noises like the cue when you find a secret will stick with you for years after you play the game. The patch I detail further below patches it back in to match the Playstation version. NB the Steam version by default doesn't include the music. It's subtle but good, and ensures that the game for the most part feels like you are alone in a remote tomb with just the environment of the area. It's used to highlight the mood of different locations, get into a combat encounter and some action music may play, enter a room with a grandiose scale and music to set the scene will play. ![]() The music is fairly memorable but not playing constantly. Lara will auto lock her guns on any targets, and you can hold the shoot button to fire on any enemies, however you may find yourself fighting the camera a bit as enemies run around you, and your careful manoeuvring when platforming can quickly become unstuck when enemies are attacking. As a result you can trust she won't miss a ledge by an inch, and can use the walk command to get as close to each tile edge as you want safely. ![]() Platforming certainly is great to control in the game thanks to grid based tiles, jumping different distances will become second nature and you can trust whether or not Lara can jump a distance or not at a glance, thanks to tile being the same distance apart. However within a level or two you will be used to them and controlling Lara will be more or less second nature. Lara is controlled using tank controls which can be a bit of a change for players more accustomed to modern games. ![]() In general I'd say this game is more focussed on the exploration and puzzle solving and the combat isn't constant in most levels, which is certainly my cup of tea. I finished the game with loads of ammo and medipacks so don't be afraid to use the better guns and keep your health topped up, rather than hoard it in case you need it. Lara by default is equipped with her trusty twin pistols, but can find ammo and other weapons as she makes her way through the game. wolves/bats e.t.c.) willing to attack you, and will likely need to eliminate these threats to proceed. Traps are later introduced so save often! The puzzles are great often combining platforming, reflexes, paying attention to walls and roofs for areas you haven't explored yet. in order to progress to the end of the level. The game is primarily based around exploring the desolate unexplored areas you find yourself in and solving puzzles to open doors, access switches find keys e.t.c. The game is a third person platformer and adventure and contains 15 levels in different locales. It took 18 hours roughly and I'm happy to say I very much enjoyed the game. ![]() ![]() ![]() Her husband, Todd, is the four-time winner of the world’s longest and toughest snowmachine race – the Iron Dog – crossing over 2000 miles of Alaska’s toughest terrain in the dead of winter. Because wild mice are so short-lived, mice are not 'built to last' and have the reputation of being unusually-prone to produce new deleterious mutations (and are therefore extremely prone to cancer, and susceptible to carcinogens - which is why mice are used to test for carcinogens). The reason why mouse utopia might produce so rapid and extreme a mutation accumulation is that wild mice naturally suffer very high mortality rates from predation. So the bizarre behaviours seen especially in Phase D - such as the male 'beautiful ones' who appeared to be healthy and spent all their time self-grooming, but were actually inert, unresponsive, unintelligent and uninterested in reproduction - were plausibly maladaptive outcomes of a population sinking under the weight of mutations. Michael A Woodley suggests that what was going on was much more likely to be mutation accumulation with deleterious (but non-fatal) genes incrementally accumulating with each generation and generating a wide range of increasingly maladaptive behavioural pathologies this process rapidly overwhelming and destroying the population before any beneficial mutations could emerge to 'save the colony from extinction. ![]() The suppression of breeding happened very quickly, and never recovered even after the population declined rapidly and crowding was reduced, and 3. The mouse population never actually became crowded, 2. But this seems, very obviously – I would have thought – an incorrect explanation because 1. The Mouse Utopia experiment is usually interpreted in terms of social stresses related to 'over-population' that crowding generated pathological behaviours and a loss of the will to reproduce. This was a very surprising outcome, biologically and implies that some very major factor about the basic requirements or behaviour of the mice was neglected. The main fact about Mouse Utopia, was that despite everything possible being done to create ideal biological conditions the mouse colony rapidly declined and became entirely extinct. To summarise – when four breeding pairs of mice were allowed to reproduce under ideal ‘utopian’ conditions, the colony entirely ceased to breed after three years, and then went extinct. The last conception was about day 920, after which there were no more births, all females were menopausal, the colony aged and all of them died. Terminal Phase E - population declining to zero. Emergence of many pathological behaviours. Phase D - days 560-920 population stagnant with births just matching deaths. ![]() Phase C - from day 315-560 population growth abruptly slowed to a doubling time of 145 days. Phase B - up to day 315 - exponential population growth doubling every 55 days. Phase A - 104 days - establishment of the mice in their new environment, then the first litters were born. What happened was described by the author in terms of five phases: establishment, exponential growth, growth slowing, breeding ceases and population stagnant, population decline and extinction: The so-called ‘Mouse Utopia’ experiment was conducted from 1968 by John B Calhounįour healthy breeding pairs of mice were allowed to reproduce freely in a 'utopian' environment with ample food and water, no predators, no disease, comfortable temperature – a near as possible ideal conditions and space. Until then, I don’t rate this any higher or lower than the Small Batch offering. I’m going to give this a few days in the bottle to open up just a bit and I’ll follow up with any updates if warranted. It’s good, on its own merits, but I’m not sure that it’s different enough from the small batch to justify the price. As a single barrel offering, I’d love for Buffalo Trace to denote the barrel number on the bottle itself. Nonetheless, it’s a very nice overall appearance. While I applaud the nod to history, the container method of packaging doesn’t add much to a bottle’s attractiveness, as most will remove the bottle from the container when displaying it anyway. The single barrel offering is packaged much like the rest of the line, in tall, attractive bottles with yellow labels, packaged in a cylindrical hard canister that harkens back to the packaging methods of Col.
